Event Description

How to Be Self-Sufficient When the Unexpected Happens
Kathy Harrison

With winter approaching and the weather throughout the year becoming less predictable, preparing for the unexpected makes more sense than ever. Please join Wild Oats Market for an evening talk on emergency preparedness, given by Kathy Harrison, the locally based author of Just in Case: How to Be Self-Sufficient When the Unexpected Happens (Storey Publishing, 2010) and a national spokesperson on emergency preparedness who has appeared on The Today Show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, and National Public Radio. Kathy will discuss how you and your family can be ready for any emergency, from a power outage to a hurricane. She will cover how to develop an evacuation plan; organize a food supply; pack an emergency kit; plan for alternative heating and cooking sources; and more.

Being prepared for the unexpected can make individuals and communities more resilient during difficult times, such as during the recent Hurricane Irene. Individuals and families who are prepared in case of emergency can get through events such as a temporary power outage more comfortably and with less stress. They are also in a better position to help others in the community.

This evening talk is free and takes place at Wild Oats Market, 320 Main St., Williamstown on Wednesday, October 19 from 6:30-7:30 pm.

Copies of Kathy’s book, Just in Case, will be available for signing and purchase.

All in the community are welcome to join us for this evening talk and to bring their questions about this important topic.

This workshop is free and open to all; to register please email marketing@wildoats.coop or call (413) 458-8060

Kathy, a resident of the Pioneer Valley will enlighten us on the skill of being prepared for when disaster strikes. She will also relate these skills to how her community is coming together to apply these skills and more to build a more resilient community.
